The Marine Corps PFT and CFT: What Each Test Is For

The Marine Corps makes you pass two annual fitness tests, six events in total, where most branches run one test. The Air Force runs one and folds body composition into it. The Air Force runs one and folds body composition into it. The Air Force runs one and folds body composition into it. The Air Force runs one and folds body composition into it. The gap between the PFT and the CFT tells you how the Corps reads a body: one scores your gym movements, the other scores you carrying things quickly under field conditions.

The PFT: three events, one of them a trap

Pull-ups or push-ups, an abdominal event, and a three-mile run. Pull-ups and push-ups sit in the same slot as alternatives, and the scoring treats them unequally, so choosing push-ups caps what that event can earn you. If you can manage a handful of pull-ups, do pull-ups.

The CFT: field tasks instead of lifts

Three events again, built around jobs. A timed movement-to-contact run, an ammunition lift for repetitions, and a manoeuvre-under-fire course that strings together sprinting, crawling, a casualty drag and carry, an ammunition can carry and a grenade throw.

Manoeuvre-under-fire is the event that sorts people out. It is the only one in either test that loads several systems in sequence, so your three-mile pace barely predicts your score. Train it as its own event.

Why strong Marines can skip the tape

The Corps screens you against a height and weight table with a tape measurement behind it, much as the Navy does before its readiness test, then ties an exemption to performance. Score highly enough on the fitness tests and you can be exempt from the body fat assessment even when you come in over the weight table.

That is a deliberate position. It says a Marine performing at that level carries the weight for a reason, which is the argument the Army made before stripping weight out of its assessment entirely in July 2026. The branch comparison covers who does what now, and the Army body composition calculator shows you a standard with the weight screen gone.

What the tape around your abdomen is reading

Abdominal muscle, gut contents and visceral fat all arrive on the same line. One tape, one number, three different things inside you. That is the limitation every circumference standard shares, and it is the whole reason the exemption exists. For a general estimate outside the assessment, the body fat calculator runs the circumference method. Where you put the tape matters more than which equation you feed it, so measuring your waist properly is most of the accuracy.

Get your numbers from the Corps

Scoring tables are age-banded, sex-banded and revised periodically, so the figures you are held to live in the Marine Corps order that governs physical fitness. Pull them from there. This page describes the structure.

Scope note, 6 October 2026: This guide provides general adult education and has not had independent clinical review. The figures it gives are estimates, not measurements. See the editorial policy and medical disclaimer.
