Estimate your body fat percentage from a tape measure using the US Navy circumference method. Men need neck and waist; women add a hip measurement. No calipers, no scan.
The Navy method predicts body fat from circumferences rather than from weight, which is why it can separate two people who weigh the same. Men supply neck, waist and height. Women add hip circumference, because fat distributes differently and the equation needs that third point to fit.
The formulas are logarithmic. For men, body fat = 495 / (1.0324 – 0.19077 x log10(waist – neck) + 0.15456 x log10(height)) – 450, with every measurement in centimetres. The female version substitutes waist plus hip minus neck and uses its own coefficients. The Naval Health Research Center developed both in 1984 so that a fitness assessment could be done anywhere with a tape.

Keep the tape level all the way round, snug enough to sit on the skin without compressing it, and take the reading at the end of a normal exhale. Measure three times and use the middle value. A centimetre of sloppiness at the waist moves the result by half to one percentage point, and repeating the same error consistently matters less than you would think, because what you care about is the change over months.

Women sit 7 to 8 points higher than men at every band, and that gap is structural rather than a fitness difference: breast tissue, and the fat around the reproductive organs, is essential mass. Dropping below the essential floor disrupts hormone production in both sexes, and in women it commonly stops menstruation.
The ACE bands ignore age, which is their main weakness. Muscle mass falls from roughly 30 onwards, so the same person at the same weight reads several points higher at 55 than at 25. Gallagher and colleagues published age-adjusted ranges in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2000, and those are the figures most clinicians work from.

Reading across the rows is the useful part. A 24 percent reading is the top of the healthy range for a man in his sixties and five points past the healthy range for a man in his twenties. Same body fat, different verdict, and the difference is not arbitrary: the older man is carrying less muscle underneath it, so the same percentage sits on a smaller frame.
The two tables disagree on purpose. ACE puts the men’s obesity line at 25 percent for everybody; Gallagher moves it to 28 and then 30 as you age. If you are over 40, read the age table and treat the ACE bands as the rougher screen.
Average and healthy are two different questions, and the charts above answer only the second one. US national survey data puts the typical adult man near 28 percent and the typical adult woman near 40 percent. Both figures sit at or past the obesity threshold for every age band under 60, rather than anywhere near the middle of the healthy range.
This trips people up. Someone measures 26 percent, compares it to friends and colleagues, and concludes they are doing fine. They are doing fine relative to the population and are above the healthy range. The chart is not describing what is common. It is describing what is associated with lower metabolic risk.
The same gap shows up in the other direction on social media, where the visible reference points are people at 8 to 12 percent. Judging yourself against either group tells you almost nothing.
Rough descriptions for men, since the numeric queries almost always come from men. Genetics move all of these by a few points, and where you store fat matters as much as how much you carry.
Women read the same descriptions 7 to 8 points higher, with the wider offset at the lean end. Visible abdominal definition usually appears between 16 and 20 percent, and going below about 14 carries a real risk of losing menstrual function.
Against DEXA scanning, the Navy equations land within about 3 to 4 percentage points for most adults. That is enough to tell 15 percent from 25 percent, and enough to track a trend over three months. It is not enough to argue about a single point, and the error widens at the extremes: very lean and very heavy bodies both read badly.
Skinfold calipers in trained hands do slightly better. Hydrostatic weighing and DEXA do much better and cost money. For someone checking whether six months of training changed anything, a tape and this equation answer the question.
Every method has its own bias. Mixing them is the common mistake: a DEXA scan in January and a tape measurement in June will not tell you what changed, because the difference between the methods is larger than the change you are looking for. Pick one and stay with it.
The percentage is a ratio, so it moves when fat mass falls, when lean mass rises, or both. In practice fat loss does most of the work, and that means an energy deficit. Two things protect muscle while you do it. Eat enough protein, and keep lifting. Cut hard without either and a good share of the weight you lose is lean tissue, which lowers the weight on the scale while barely moving the percentage.
Expect the number to move slowly. Half a point a month is normal progress, and it sits well inside the measurement error of a tape, so a single reading three weeks apart tells you nothing. Measure monthly, under the same conditions, and read the direction across three or four measurements.
BMI cannot tell 80 kg of muscle from 80 kg of fat. Body fat percentage is the number most people actually mean when they reach for BMI, and it is the reason a lean athlete gets classed as overweight by the BMI calculator while measuring 12 percent here.
