The Navy PRT: How the Test Is Built and What Comes Before It
Search for a Navy PRT calculator and you are usually after two things at once: the fitness events, and the body composition screen that decides whether you get to take them. They are separate assessments. They fail separately, and plenty of sailors only discover that on the morning one of them catches them out.
The body composition assessment comes first
The Navy screens you against a height and weight table. Inside the table, you are done. Over it, you move to an abdominal circumference measurement, with a circumference-based body fat estimate sitting behind that as a further step.
This is the structure the Army ran until July 2026 and then abandoned. The Army’s argument for dropping it was that weight makes a poor first gate, because it sends muscular people to the tape and waves light people with large waists straight through. The Navy kept the gate, so work out which system you are in before you assume a threshold applies to you. The branch-by-branch comparison lays the differences out.
The physical readiness test
Three components: a trunk endurance hold, an upper body muscular endurance event, and a cardio event. The Marine Corps runs six events across two tests, which is the other extreme. The Marine Corps runs six events across two tests, which is the other extreme. The cardio is where the Navy diverges most from the other branches, because it offers you alternatives to running. A timed run is the default. Rowing, cycling, elliptical and, at some commands, swimming are available as substitutes.
Your performance lands in one of several named categories, banded by age group and sex, which is why two sailors with identical run times can finish in different categories. The Air Force scores a waist measurement inside the test itself, which no other branch does. The Air Force scores a waist measurement inside the test itself, which no other branch does. Where sailors lose the most
The cardio alternatives suit different people, and picking the wrong one costs you more than you would expect, because a strong runner who switches to the row on the theory that it sounds easier usually posts a worse score than the run they were avoiding. Test yourself on both well before the assessment. Finding out on the day is expensive.
On the body composition side, abdominal circumference is one tape measurement, and where the tape sits decides the number. The waist measurement guide covers what half an inch of drift is worth. For a general body fat estimate between assessments, the body fat calculator runs the Navy circumference method, which is where its name comes from.

Age-banded tables and category boundaries change, and a snapshot printed here would sit in your memory with no date stamp attached to it. Pull the current tables from the Navy’s own physical readiness publication. This page describes the structure; the Navy publishes the standard.
